About Fosenfjorden Marine Protected Area

The Fosenfjorden Marine Protected Area (MPA) is located along the Trøndelag coast in central Norway, encompassing an important stretch of the Fosenfjorden and adjacent coastal waters. This protected marine environment preserves critical habitats such as rocky reefs, underwater kelp forests, and spawning grounds that support varied marine species including cod, herring, and several shellfish varieties. The fjord itself is framed by steep, forested shorelines and scattered islands, creating a dramatic scenery typical of Norway’s rugged coastline.

The MPA was established to safeguard marine biodiversity against threats such as overfishing, habitat degradation, and pollution. It also serves as a buffer for adjacent fisheries and supports migratory seabirds and marine mammals like seals and porpoises. Visitors are drawn to its clear waters and scenic fjord vistas, making it a prime location for kayaking, paddle boarding, and ecotourism. The area is accessible by boat, with several nearby coastal villages providing access points and local knowledge.

While the protected area does not feature designated hiking trails within the water boundaries, the adjacent terrestrial zones offer hiking and wildlife observation opportunities, often coupled with traditional fishing culture explorations. Its combination of ecological importance and outdoor recreation appeal make Fosenfjorden MPA an exceptional model of marine conservation intertwined with sustainable tourism. Seasonal changes bring varied wildlife sightings, particularly bird migrations in spring and autumn, enhancing its value for naturalists and photographers.
